"Save Me from Myself," is an emotionally raw look into guitarist Brian Welch's time with Korn, his battle with addiction, and his life-changing encounter with faith. Though I am not necessarily a Korn fan myself, I've always admired Brian's honesty and his heart for the Lord. So, when I discovered he had a couple of books under his belt, I was more than curious to see how Welch would tell his story.

The book traces Brian's rise to fame in Korn, a band that help define the nu-metal movement. Though Brian seemed to have it all (fame, fortune, success), what came along with it was a crippling drug addiction, broken relationships, and a loss of identity. After years of dysfunctionality, Christ radically changes Brian's life, repairing and restoring what was once broken. Because of this, Brian felt compelled to leave Korn and start on a journey of healing.

While Brian may not be a writer in the conventional sense, the choppy paragraph structures, run-on sentences, and fragments add a sense of humanity to the book. This isn't just another million-dollar rockstar trying to make a quick buck off of devout fans. It's someone sharing the skeletons in their closet just to save one more soul. Brian openly shares who he was and what he went through, leaving nothing out, no matter how dark or uncomfortable. His vulnerability is what gives this book it’s emotional weight and authenticity.

This is the type of book that turns your stomach—not in disgust, but in a way that forces you to reflect on who you are, what you believe in, and how those beliefs shape your identity. Brian doesn’t pretend to be perfect, but instead he lovingly emphasizes the importance of transformation through Christ Jesus, and the power we receive through Him.

 Brian writes,

"I didn't get clean so I could live a boring Christian life. I got clean so I could really live."

Living sober isn't just something we do to make us feel better about ourselves or make us "holier," but we choose to live this way because sobriety allows us to walk in clarity, self-control, and spiritual discernment. It positions us to hear God's voice more clearly, to love others more deeply, and to live lives that are set apart in a world that often celebrates excess and distraction. Living sober is about aligning our hearts and minds with God's will and staying vigilant. When we give in to self-destructive desires, we hurt those around us, pull ourselves away from God, and give way to the enemy.

Brian’s story is a reminder no one is too far gone for redemption. His journey from the depths of addiction to a life anchored in faith isn’t about perfection, it’s about persistence, surrender, and grace. It challenges the lie that our worth is found in status, fame, or fleeting pleasure. Instead, it points to a deeper truth: that real life begins when we lay everything down at the feet of Christ. His transformation isn't a fairytale ending, but a daily walk.

This book isn't about fame or failure; it's about finding life in the one place we forget to look:

surrender.

  1. This was incredibly well written. Brian is an inspiring example. His story paints the picture that dwelling between the walls of distraction will eventually close in on you & crush you. But surrendering all that you are to our gracious Father will leave you more peaceful & joyful than you’ve ever been. Jesus grants the strength to be able to sit alone with your thoughts; letting Him hold your heart in His hands (is safe.) Forever renewed.

God bless & Keep it up!
